Tradition Travels With Us

Today is August 15th, Acadian Day and for me, it’s a beautiful reminder that some of the most meaningful things we carry with us we have had since birth, our heritage.

Our traditions, our stories, our music, our food, our language, and the little things our families have done for generations, these are the cultural components that show us where we come from.

Being Acadian has taught me that heritage isn’t something we simply look back on. It’s something we live, share, celebrate, and pass along.

And perhaps that’s one of the most mindful things we can do. Today I celebrate my mémère who is not here in body, but her spirit lives on in me.

When we travel, we’re often fascinated by the traditions of other places. We admire their celebrations, taste their food, listen to their music, learn a few words of their language, and marvel at the things that make a culture unique.

But here’s my little reminder:

Don’t forget to celebrate your own!

Tell the story, make the recipe, sing the song, speak the language, put on the music that makes your heart remember. Then gather up your family and friends and teach others where you come from, and let them know that their heritage is something worth carrying forward. When we honour our own traditions, we become even more curious and respectful travellers of the world.

We realize that every culture has its stories. Every family has its traditions, every community has something beautiful worth preserving. So today, on August 15th, I’m celebrating my Acadian roots with a grateful heart and perhaps a little extra good food! After all, some traditions are best experienced around a table.

May we always be proud of where we come from, curious about where we’re going, and mindful enough to carry the best of both with us.
