Do Good Anyway

Have you ever done something kind for someone when you knew you’d get absolutely nothing in return?

No thank-you. No recognition. No applause. Nobody even knew you did it.

Do it anyway.

Because doing the right thing isn’t about being seen.

It’s about who we are when nobody is watching.

That’s integrity.

And just like any muscle, integrity gets stronger when we exercise it.

Every day is another opportunity to flex that muscle at home, at work, on vacation, in our communities and even when we’re far away from the people who know us.

Doing good doesn’t have to be a grand gesture.

Sometimes it’s holding the door for someone whose hands are full. Letting someone go ahead of you in line when they’re clearly having a rushed day. Picking up something someone dropped. Checking in on a friend. Giving a genuine compliment. Leaving a little kindness behind instead of a little mess. Thanking the person who serves your coffee. Offering to help someone who looks like they’re struggling. Buying a coffee for someone. Sharing a smile with a stranger. Putting your grocery cart back instead of leaving it in the middle of the parking lot. Leaving a place just a little better than you found it.

These things may seem small.

We never really know what someone else is carrying.

Your five second act of kindness might be the brightest part of their day.

Mr. Mindful Traveller has a habit I absolutely treasure.

He’ll often bring me a coffee.

It’s such a simple thing.

It’s not expensive.

It doesn’t require a grand romantic gesture or a beautifully wrapped present.

When he walks in with that coffee, I know exactly what it says:

“I thought about you.”

And I am so grateful for it.

Every. Single. Time.

I thank him because I never want to become so accustomed to someone’s kindness that I stop noticing it.

That’s another part of mindfulness.

Appreciating the little acts of love that happen right in front of us.

Here is something I’ve learned through travelling:

Kindness has no language barrier.

You don’t need to speak the same language to smile at someone. You don’t need the same background to help someone. You don’t need to know someone’s story to treat them with dignity.

Whether we’re at home or halfway around the world, we get to decide what kind of energy we leave behind.

We can leave a place a little brighter. A person a little happier. A stranger feeling a little more seen.

That is one of the greatest gifts we can give, not because we expect anything back, but because being a good human feels good.

So today, look for an opportunity.

Not a huge one. Just a little one.

Hold the door. Give the compliment. Make the coffee. Send the message. Let someone merge into traffic. Pay for someone’s coffee. Ask someone how they’re doing and actually listen. Say thank you. Say I’m sorry. Say I appreciate you.

And if nobody notices?

That’s okay.

You noticed.

Somewhere inside you, that integrity muscle just got a little stronger.

The world doesn’t necessarily need more grand gestures.

It needs more people quietly choosing kindness when they could choose indifference.

At home. Away. On vacation. In the grocery store. In the airport. In the parking lot. Everywhere.

Mindful Traveller thought:

Do good when nobody is watching. Be kind when nobody is keeping score and never underestimate the power of a small act of love.

The smallest gesture can brighten someone’s entire day.

The more kindness we give away, the fuller our own hearts become.

So flex that integrity muscle today.

Do good anyway.

Yours with intention, Ms. Mindful Traveller
