The Luck of the Draw

Sometimes in life, you really do get the luck of the draw.
Not because everything falls perfectly into place, but because every once in a while, the right people, the right opportunity and the right adventure seem to find their way to you at exactly the right time.
I think about that a lot when it comes to pickleball.
You might show up for the game thinking you’re there to play a sport, and before long, you’re laughing with people you barely knew that morning. A few games become familiar faces, familiar faces become friendships, and suddenly you’re looking forward to the people as much as you’re looking forward to playing.
Finding the right sport can be a little like finding the right group of friends. You try something new, you aren’t quite sure what you’re doing, you make a few questionable shots and wonder if that ball was actually supposed to go there. Then something clicks. You discover that you enjoy the game, the challenge keeps you coming back, and somewhere along the way, you’ve found your people.
And isn’t that a pretty lucky thing?
The beauty of pickleball isn’t only in the points or the wins. It’s in the camaraderie, the encouragement across the net, the laughs between games and the friendships that develop when you keep showing up. Some days you play beautifully; other days, well… let’s just say the ball and I aren’t always on speaking terms.
But every game gives us another chance to learn, improve, compete and enjoy ourselves.
And then there are those days when everything comes together. The shots are working, the teamwork is clicking, the competition is fierce and somehow you find yourself coming out on top.
Those moments feel pretty great.
But I’ve learned that winning means a little more when you’ve got good people beside you to celebrate it with. A medal is wonderful, but the friendships, memories and stories created along the way are the real treasures.
Maybe that’s the luck we’re really talking about.
The luck of finding a sport that makes you want to move, laugh and keep improving. The luck of meeting people who become friends. The luck of discovering a community where you feel like you belong. And, if the pickleball gods are feeling generous, the occasional win to remind you that all those hours on the court weren’t just about having fun.
Sometimes we get the medal. Sometimes we get the memories. And if we’re really lucky, we get both.
Mindful Traveller thought:
Life is full of draws we don’t get to control — where we land, who we meet and which unexpected adventure becomes part of our story. But when we find something that brings us joy and people who make the journey better, that’s a kind of winning all on its own.
Find your game. Find your people. Play with joy. And when the cards fall your way, enjoy every minute of it.
Because sometimes the greatest luck isn’t winning the game.
It’s finding the right people to play it with.
