The Gift of Abundance

What do you have in abundance?
When we hear the word abundance, our minds can easily wander toward money, possessions or the things we have accumulated. However, I’ve come to think that abundance has very little to do with how much we have and much more to do with what we have to give.
Perhaps you have a garden that has gone a little wild with tomatoes, zucchini and herbs, or a fruit tree producing far more apples or pears than you could possibly eat. Maybe your abundance is an extra chair around your kitchen table, a little more time in your day, a talent you’ve spent years developing or knowledge that could make someone else’s journey a little easier. Perhaps you have a wonderful sense of humour, a listening ear, a warm heart or simply the energy to check in on someone who could use a little company.
We all have something.
The trouble is, we can become so focused on what is missing that we overlook what is already right in front of us. We look at someone else’s abundance and wonder why we don’t have more, when perhaps the more meaningful question is, What do I have enough of that I could share?
That shift in perspective can change everything.
A garden’s extra harvest can become a neighbour’s supper. A meal shared around your table can become one of those evenings everyone remembers long after the dishes are put away. An hour of your time can mean the world to someone who has been feeling lonely. A coffee bought for someone can be a small reminder that they were thought of. Your travel experiences might help a friend discover a place they would otherwise have missed, and a little encouragement might give someone the courage to take a first step of their own.
Sometimes abundance is tangible. Sometimes it is simply the goodness we carry with us.
I’ve always believed that some of the best things in life become better when they are shared. A beautiful view feels a little more beautiful when someone is standing beside you. A great meal is more memorable around a table filled with conversation. A travel story becomes more meaningful when it inspires someone else to dream. Even a good laugh seems to grow when there are people there to laugh with you.
That is the beautiful paradox of abundance: when we give some of it away, we rarely feel like we have less.
In fact, we often discover we have more.
More connection. More gratitude. More purpose. More joy.
We don’t need to change the world every day. Sometimes abundance looks much simpler than that. It might be inviting someone for coffee, dropping off a meal, sharing what your garden has produced, opening your home, offering a ride, making the phone call you’ve been meaning to make, sharing what you know or simply asking someone, “How can I help?”
There is no shortage of opportunities to be generous when we begin to notice what we already have.
So today, I’m looking around my own life with a little more appreciation. Not wondering what is missing, but noticing what is plentiful. The people I love. The experiences I’ve collected. The lessons travel has taught me. The food on my table. The home I can open to others. The time I can share. The stories I can tell. The laughter that comes easily when good friends gather.
Abundance isn’t about having everything. It is about recognizing that we already have something worth sharing.
The greatest gift isn’t what someone gives us at all. It is the beautiful realization that we have something to give.
Mindful Traveller thought: Perhaps abundance isn’t measured by how much we can keep, but by how much goodness we are willing to share.
Look around.
What do you have in abundance?
Who might be a little richer because you decided to share it?
Abundantly yours, Ms. Mindful Traveller
