The Harvest Moon

Contents

There is something about a Harvest Moon that makes you want to slow down and look up. Traditionally, the Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the autumn equinox, associated with the time of year when crops were gathered and stored for the months ahead. Its early evening light once gave farmers a little more time to bring in what they had grown. I love the idea of a moon being connected to harvest because it reminds us that our lives deserve a harvest season too.

We spend so much of our time looking ahead planning the next trip, the next adventure, the next goal, the next chapter, that sometimes we forget to pause and notice what has already grown around us. The friendships we have gathered, family moments we have shared, meals around the table, people who have opened their homes and hearts to us, places that have become part of our story, and the little moments that seemed insignificant at the time but somehow became the memories we treasure most.

So many of our Mindful Moments aren’t really about having more; they are about noticing more. Travel has taught us that some of the best souvenirs cannot be bought. They are the conversations with strangers, unexpected invitations, meals that lasted longer than planned, friendships made far from home, and the feeling of being welcomed when you least expected it. Maybe that is our own harvest, not the things we have accumulated, but the moments we have gathered along the way.

As the seasons change, the Harvest Moon offers a gentle invitation to pause and take stock. What have you planted? What has grown? What have you learned? Who has helped you along the way? And what are you grateful to have gathered? Just as a harvest is not the end but part of a much larger cycle, neither is one chapter of our lives. We gather some things, release others, plant again and carry certain moments forward.

So, the next time you see the Harvest Moon, take a moment to look up. Gather your gratitude, your memories, your people, your lessons and your joy. The greatest harvest isn’t what we bring in from the fields, but what we gather along the way.

Yours in reflecting, Ms. Mindful Traveller
