Stretch Before You Soar

There is more to preparing for a flight than checking in, packing a suitcase and making sure we haven’t forgotten our passports. Sometimes, the best preparation happens before we even leave home. For us, a hot yoga class can be a wonderful way to shift into travel mode, giving us time to stretch, breathe and reconnect with ourselves before settling into hours of airport queues and cramped airplane seats.
The gentle movements of yoga help us work on flexibility, mobility and body awareness, while the focus on breathing gives us a chance to quiet the mental chatter that often accompanies travel days. Instead of rushing through a thousand last-minute details, we can take an hour to slow down, release some tension and remind ourselves that the journey is part of the adventure, too.
Travel can be exciting, but it can also be physically demanding. Long flights mean sitting for extended periods, often with limited room to move. Taking time to care for our bodies before departure is one small way to be kinder to ourselves. And once we’re on board, we can continue that mindfulness with ankle circles, gentle seated movements, regular opportunities to stand and walk when it is safe to do so, and a little attention to our breathing.
Of course, hot yoga isn’t about pushing ourselves to the limit or sweating out all our travel worries. The heat makes hydration especially important, so we need to drink water before and after class, listen to our bodies and leave plenty of time to cool down and recover before heading to the airport. A gentler, non-heated yoga session may be the better choice if we’re tired, dehydrated or not accustomed to exercising in the heat.
Perhaps the greatest benefit is the reminder that we don’t have to wait until we reach our destination to begin enjoying the journey. We can create little moments of calm right here, right now, even when our minds are already wandering to the places we’re about to explore.
So before the next takeoff, let’s stretch a little, breathe a little deeper and loosen our grip on the things we can’t control. The flight might be long, the seats might be small, and someone may still recline right into our personal space, but at least we’ll have given ourselves a mindful head start!
Mindful takeaway: Prepare your body, settle your mind and remember that a beautiful adventure begins long before the wheels leave the ground.
Yours stretched and ready,
