Week 5 August 2026 Mindful Moments Digest
August 31: Neighbours Who Become Family
Sometimes, the greatest gift life gives us isn’t a place… it’s the people we meet there. Neighbours can start as the people living next door, across the hall, or down the street. But somewhere along the way, they can become so much more.
They become the ones who check in, lend a hand, share a cup of coffee, recommend the best restaurant, water your plants, pick something up for you, or simply notice when you need a little kindness.
At home and away, we’ve been lucky enough to experience the beautiful gift of people helping people. There is something pretty special about discovering that when you need someone, somehow… someone appears. Maybe life has a funny way of placing the right people in our path exactly when we need them.
Then comes change, sometimes we leave a neighbourhood we’ve loved. We say goodbye to familiar faces, shared laughs, spontaneous visits and the comfort of knowing who lives just around the corner. It can be bittersweet.
But maybe just maybe, every goodbye is also an invitation.
A new home means new hallways, new streets, new coffee spots… and new neighbours who might become the next chapter of our story.
That’s the beautiful thing about new beginnings. We don’t have to know who we’re going to meet or what friendships are waiting for us. We simply have to be open.
Whether we’re home or halfway around the world, community can find us. So today, let’s appreciate the neighbours who have become family, the strangers who became friends, and the people who showed up exactly when we needed them.
As we step into new communities, let’s remember:
New neighbours. New connections. New adventures.
Who knows? The person living next door might just become someone you never imagined you needed.
That’s a pretty wonderful thing to be mindful of.
Yours embracing change, Ms. Mindful Traveller
September 1: In Puerto Vallarta Someone Always Knows a Guy… or Gal!
One of my favourite things about Puerto Vallarta isn’t just the sunshine, the ocean, the food or the slower pace of life.
It’s the people.
In Puerto Vallarta, you are almost always just one conversation away from finding exactly what you need. Need a doctor? Someone knows a gal. Looking for a great restaurant that isn’t in every guidebook? Someone knows a guy.
Want a private tour guide who will show you the insides of PV? “I know someone!”
Dreaming of a boat ride, fishing trip, massage, hair appointment, handyman, mechanic, taxi, photographer, or pretty much anything else? Just ask.
Somehow, someone always seems to have a recommendation. I absolutely LOVE that about this place. There is something wonderfully human about communities that share their knowledge. People don’t just give you a name and a phone number, they give you the story behind it.
“Go see her. She’s amazing.”
“Tell him I sent you.”
“They’re the best!”
Suddenly, a stranger becomes a connection, and a simple question becomes a conversation.
Of course, we still have to use our common sense and do our own homework when it comes to important things. But there is something comforting about knowing that you don’t always have to figure everything out alone.
Sometimes, you just have to ask.
Be willing to ask for help. Be willing to share what you know and be willing to make an introduction.
You never know when the person sitting beside you at coffee, the neighbour in the elevator, or the new friend you just met might have exactly the connection you were looking for. In PV, it often feels like the world is a little smaller.
You are never very far from…
“Oh, I know a guy.”
Or better yet…
“I know a gal!”
And just like that, you’re one conversation closer to your next great discovery. Sometimes the best travel resource is the people we meet along the way.
Yours willing to ask, Ms. Mindful Traveller
September 2: Life Quests
What if life isn’t meant to be a checklist… but a collection of quests? A quest to seek out adventure. A quest to courageously open your heart and mind. A quest to take legendary actions, even when they feel a little scary. A quest to create, imagine, paint, write, build, dance, dream and leave a little piece of yourself behind and a quest to keep learning, growing and discovering through educational conquests.
Some quests take us across the world. Others take us deep within ourselves. Maybe your greatest adventure today is trying something new. Maybe it’s having the conversation you’ve been avoiding, learning a new skill, helping someone who needs it, or simply choosing kindness when you could choose frustration.
Every day gives us another opportunity to become a little more curious, courageous, creative and connected.
The greatest life quest of all potentially is: Working on yourself today and always, not because you aren’t enough, but because you believe there is always more goodness you can bring into the world. Every brave step you take, every lesson you learn, every creative idea you share and every act of kindness has the potential to create a ripple.
So go ahead…
Seek the adventure. Open your heart. Take the legendary leap. Create something wonderful. Learn something new, and leave the world just a little more positive than you found it.
Your life is the quest.
Living a legendary life, Ms. Mindful Traveller
September 3: Portugal: Tiles, Trams, Tarts & Vino Verde
There are some places you visit and then there are places that seem to settle right into your soul. Portugal could be one of those places.
From the colourful streets of Porto, to the energy of Lisbon, and the breathtaking beauty of the Douro Valley. Portugal reminds us that sometimes the best way to travel is simply to slow down and take it all in.
In Porto, we loved discovering how easy it is to get around. The metro system makes exploring feel effortless, leaving you more time to wander, discover little cafés, admire the architecture and, of course, enjoy a glass of wine!
Speaking of vino, Vinho Verde is light, refreshing and absolutely perfect for sipping while watching the world go by. Sometimes mindfulness comes in a wine glass, as I reminisce about Portugal.
Then there’s Lisbon, with its hills, trams, winding streets and endless character. Around every corner is another beautiful scene although sometimes distracted by cranes, the Portuguese tiles, or azulejos are gorgeous, they turn ordinary buildings into works of art.
And then… the Douro Valley.
Wow. Definitely a highlight of our vacation. Rolling vineyards stretching along the river, terraced hillsides, charming villages and landscapes that make you stop talking for a moment which, for us travellers, is saying something!
Let’s not forget one of Portugal’s most delicious little treasures: the pastel de nata.
That flaky, golden pastry filled with creamy custard and sprinkled with cinnamon is basically a mindful moment all by itself. Find a little café, order a coffee and a pastel de nata, sit back and enjoy every single bite.
No rushing allowed.
Portugal taught us another little mindful lesson:
You don’t have to rush to experience more.
Take the metro. Wander the streets. Look up at the tiles. Sip the Vinho Verde. Enjoy a pastel de nata. Watch the Douro River. Get lost down a little lane. Stop for coffee. Have another glass of wine. And let the day unfold.
Because sometimes the most memorable moments aren’t the ones we planned.
They’re the ones where we simply paused long enough to notice how beautiful the moment was.
Travel mindfully. Wander freely. Sip slowly. Eat the pastry, and always leave room for a little wonderment.
Yours reminiscing, Ms. Mindful Traveller
September 4: Mallorca, Spain: Take the Scenic Route
There are some places that make you want to slow down, look around, and say, “Wow… we’re really here.”
Mallorca was one of those places for us.
One of the things we loved most was how easy it was to explore. Hop on a bus, sit back, and let someone else do the driving. No stressing over parking, no worrying about directions just choose a destination and enjoy the ride. Palma was wonderfully connected, making it easy to combine beaches, villages, markets and culture. The incredible Cathedral of Mallorca, rising beside the Mediterranean, is one of those places that makes you stop in your tracks. The light, the architecture, the history… it feels almost magical.
We wandered through the old streets, discovering art galleries, beautiful courtyards, little shops and hidden corners. Palma’s historic centre is practically an invitation to get a little lost and sometimes getting lost is exactly how you find the best parts of a place. Then there were the beaches with turquoise water, warm sunshine, and sandy toes. That wonderful Mediterranean feeling of having absolutely nowhere you need to be.
Let’s talk about the food! Fresh seafood, tapas, local produce, pastries and, of course, the famous ensaimada. Mallorca’s markets are full of colour, smells and flavours that make wandering around feel like an adventure all by itself.
One of our favourites was Alcúdia, where the historic walled town comes alive with its market. Walking among the stalls, exploring the old stone streets and soaking up the atmosphere reminded us that sometimes the best travel experiences aren’t the big attractions they’re the everyday moments happening right in front of you.
Mallorca has even more to discover: the dramatic Serra de Tramuntana, charming mountain villages like Sóller, Deià and Valldemossa, Bellver Castle and its incredible views, Joan Miró’s artistic legacy, boat trips and Mediterranean sunsets, hidden coves and crystal-clear water, ancient villages, markets and local traditions, olive groves, vineyards and the beautiful countryside.
I think our biggest takeaway from Mallorca was this:
Travel doesn’t have to be complicated to be extraordinary.
Sometimes it’s simply getting on a bus with no worries, wandering down a street you’ve never seen before, finding an amazing meal, stopping to admire a sculpture, dipping your toes in the sea or sitting quietly in a magnificent church.
It’s being curious.
It’s being present.
It’s saying yes to one more adventure.
Don’t rush through your destination checking things off a list.
Ride the bus. Wander the market. Taste something new. Walk the beach. Look up at the architecture. Stop for the view. Get a little lost.
Because sometimes the most memorable souvenirs aren’t things we bring home.
They’re the moments when we stopped rushing and simply enjoyed being there.
Fondly remembering, Ms. Mindful Traveller
September 5: Save for the Journey
Sometimes the best way to get to the places we dream about is to start saving for them today. Travel doesn’t have to mean having more, it can mean choosing what matters most.
Maybe it’s picking up a side hustle, cooking at home instead of eating out, enjoying a quiet night in, or thinking twice before buying something we really don’t need. Maybe it’s going through the closets, cupboards and storage spaces and selling the things we no longer use. Every little bit adds up.
That expensive dinner, the impulse purchase, or the things gathering dust might be worth something else: a plane ticket, a sunset in a new place, a new adventure, or a memory you’ll talk about for years.
Mindful saving isn’t about going without it’s about going with purpose.
Spend less on things that fill the house, and save more for experiences that fill the heart.
Dream it. Save for it. Then go!
Living intentionally, Ms. Mindful Traveller
September 6: Finding the Beauty in Heraklion
There’s something wonderfully grounding about arriving in Heraklion, Crete. Maybe it’s the warmth of the Greek sun, the sound of people chatting over coffee, or the smell of incredible Greek food drifting through the streets. From fresh seafood and Greek salads to creamy tzatziki, warm pita and all those delicious little bites meant for sharing in Crete, eating isn’t just a meal, it’s an experience. One we are very happy to experience again and again!
Then there’s the history. Museums, ancient treasures and stories around every corner remind you that you’re walking through a place with thousands of years of history. It’s hard not to slow down and appreciate how many generations have walked these same streets before us.
One thing that really stood out to us was the feeling of safety. There’s something peaceful about wandering, exploring and simply enjoying a destination without constantly looking over your shoulder. That sense of ease lets you be present to notice the little things, meet people, explore a museum or simply sit and watch the world go by.
Now, let’s talk about colour, or the lack thereof. Heraklion may not be the most colourful place we’ve visited. There are plenty of beautiful shades of white, beige, stone and… well, more beige! But perhaps that’s part of the charm. The simplicity allows the blue of the Greek sky, the turquoise of the sea and the vibrant colours of the food to steal the show.
And isn’t that a mindful lesson in itself? Beauty doesn’t always have to be loud or colourful. Sometimes it’s found in simplicity. In history. In hospitality. In a delicious meal shared with good company. In feeling safe enough to wander without a plan.
Mindful travel is noticing what a place gives you even when it isn’t what you expected.
So here’s to Heraklion: History to explore, food to savour, beauty in the sea and sky, culture to experience, people to meet, and plenty of reasons to slow down and simply be.
Sometimes, the experience is the colour.
Colourfully yours, Ms. Mindful Traveller
