The Beautiful Imperfection of Forgiveness

Forgiveness isn’t always easy.

Sometimes someone hurts us, disappoints us, says the wrong thing or simply behaves in a way we never expected from them.

Our first instinct can be to hold on.

We remember what they said. We remember what they did. We replay the moment and wonder how someone we cared about could have gotten it so wrong.

Here is the thing about being human:

We’re all going to get it wrong sometimes.

We will say things we don’t mean. We will have bad days. We will make selfish choices. We will misunderstand each other. We will disappoint people we love.

Not because we’re bad people.

Because we’re imperfect humans trying to figure this life out as we go.

Forgiveness begins when we remember that.

What if we didn’t expect everyone to always say the right thing, make the right choice or handle every situation perfectly?

What if we gave people a little room to stumble?

That doesn’t mean we ignore behaviour that genuinely hurts us. It doesn’t mean we accept cruelty or repeatedly allow someone to cross our boundaries.

It simply means we can recognize:

“You made a mistake.”

Sometimes the person who hurt us may have been struggling with something we knew nothing about.

Sometimes they may not even realize how their words affected us.

They may simply have had a spectacularly human moment.

We’ve all had those.

You know… the moments we’d happily like to return to sender.

Holding a grudge can feel like we’re making someone else pay for what they did.

But often, we’re the ones carrying it.

We take the memory into conversations, friendships and new experiences. Something that happened yesterday can quietly steal a little bit of joy from today.

Life is far too precious for that.

Forgiveness gives us another choice.

We can remember without resenting. We can learn without remaining angry. We can have boundaries without having bitterness.

We can decide that the relationship may need to change, while still wishing the person well.

We can accept that they weren’t the person we hoped they would be in that moment and allow them the possibility of becoming better.

Maybe forgiveness isn’t about deciding that what happened was okay.

Maybe it’s about deciding that one imperfect moment doesn’t have to define an entire person or an entire relationship.

Think about the people who have forgiven us.

The times we’ve needed another chance.

The words someone graciously chose not to hold against us.

The mistakes that could have become permanent cracks but instead became moments of growth.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to offer some of that same grace to others?

Not because everyone deserves unlimited chances.

Compassion makes the world a little softer.

As Mindful Travellers, we talk a lot about travelling light.

Perhaps that applies to life too.

We don’t need to pack every disappointment.

We don’t need to keep a suitcase full of old grudges.

We can take the lesson, keep the love that still belongs there, leave behind what no longer serves us and continue on our way.

People are complicated.

People are messy.

People are wonderfully, frustratingly, beautifully human.

So the next time someone lets you down, perhaps pause before writing the final chapter.

Take a breath.

Give them, and yourself a little grace.

Forgive where you can.

Set boundaries where you need to and remember that sometimes the most loving thing we can do is allow someone to be imperfect without making them carry that mistake forever.

Yours in forgiveness, Ms. Mindful Traveller
